Course Information and Summary
Community Youth Programme : This pilot programme run by Cambridge Online is designed to provide 90-minute after school classes on a weekly basis in creative technology, delivered over 10-12 sessions. If preferable to the school we can alter the sessions to run for 60-minutes over a longer spread. The course is aimed at secondary school and young adults (usually 11-17) and is designed to be interactive and fun, during the darker evenings. We seek to work in partnership with local schools and centres to secure location, signpost pupils, and staff are welcomed to assist on the project directly, on an opt-in basis from each venue.
We have developed a syllabus to use tablets (provided by Cambridge Online), which focuses on creativity, constructive learning, developing new technical skills and gives opportunity to work in teams later in the project. The core subjects include Researching a Theme, Working with Still-Images, Working with Moving-Images & Video, Working with Text, Image & Video Editing, Displaying your Work.
The delivery of the syllabus in classes will come primarily on the iPad, through the art software Procreate and supplemented through the apple software iMovie, Photos, Photo Booth (where we learn students use their own Android devices, alternative software and instructions will be signposted). We will also touch on using devices in-built Screen-Recording function, as well as using Canva to design for print or social media.
Cambridge Online will provide all digital devices for use in the classroom. We will also provide paper and pens where students do not have their own.
It will benefit students to have access to their own digital devices that they can use outside of the classroom; but this is not a requirement. It may benefit students to have access to the internet outside of the classroom, but this is not a requirement (If students do not have access to the internet at home, this is something we may be able to help with via mobile data).
Course Objectives & Policies
We aim to develop transferrable skills throughout the project such as researching, writing, presentation, and teamwork.
Our intention is to work with each student to develop their existing skills and learn new ones; through exploring their interests or thoughts, then helping them to develop their own ‘voice’ when it comes to expressing these ideas. We will encourage students to think about their local area in a constructive way during the project.
At the end of the project the aim is to have a body of students’ work which reflects a range of formats according to the student’s individual strengths and interests, including images, text, or video. These can then be presented/exhibited at the end of the project, in partnership with the school or another local venue. It is our aim that all the above will aid students with their confidence and wellbeing, as well as with learning skills along the way.
The work is not academically ‘graded’; however constructive feedback will be given throughout and at the completion of the project, along with a certificate from Cambridge Online. We will work to signpost students to appropriate academic courses after the project where desired.
